At 19:00, August 18, Xinya College, Tsinghua University held an opening ceremony for the students admitted in 2022 at the reception hall of the Central Main Building of Tsinghua University. A total of 99 freshmen were welcomed by members of the administrative council of Xinya College, representatives of course teachers, class teachers, freshmen's advisors, representatives of teachers from other faculties as well as departments and offices, staff of the student community management center, counselors, and representatives of senior students at Xinya College. The ceremony was presided over by Ruan Dong, Head of the Party Work Group and Deputy Dean of Xinya College.

In the beautiful warm-up melody of A Thousand Years, the ceremony kicked off. Ruan first introduced the guests present and extended a warm welcome to them and all freshmen. Senior students at Xinya Orchestra sang the college's anthem Xinya Prelude together with some freshmen. The two lines of lyrics "to pursue innovative development; to maintain grace and elegance" fully expressed the welcome of all members of the college to the freshmen and aptly showed the quality and temperament of all the students passed on from class to class.

Later, representatives of students admitted in 2018, 2020 and 2021 all delivered speeches. Based on his academic visit to Oxford University and experience of labor-based study of Xinya College, Chen Kai, a student admitted in 2018 and majoring in World Literatures & Cultures, explained his unique personal understanding of "multiple-level consciousness". Chen hoped that all students could try to step out of their own perspectives, be more warmhearted and tolerant, respect and understand each other while retaining different colors, and work together to guard the Xinya community. Li Yunting, a student admitted in 2020 and majoring in Economics and Finance, encouraged the freshmen to take big, steady steps forward in liberal arts education. She hoped that the students can put their talent to good use, communicate with each other, maintain their curiosity, modesty and prudence, and grow together in the warm and dynamic Xinya family. Jiang Zhang, a student admitted in 2021 and majoring in Creative Design and Intelligent Engineering, shared what he had learned in the study and life at the college. He hoped that the students would learn to accept uncertainty, cherish thousands of possibilities in uncertainty, and explore ways of thinking from multiple perspectives in their multidisciplinary studies. Jiang also hoped that the freshmen could filter out the "disturbing light" and see the "brilliant river of stars" in their life at the college. On behalf of the freshmen, Xu Xiaoyue from Tonggu Middle School of Jiangxi Province delivered a speech. Xu said that she, as a freshman, felt the warmth and kindness of the college. She also firmly believed that the college's liberal arts education will bring countless possibilities to the students. She hoped that they can leave wonderful marks on every step they take and every path they choose. She is willing to join hands with the freshmen to pursue the ideal that they hold dear to their hearts and eventually become better.

The Xinya community cannot be built without the hard work and dedication of the course teachers, resident scholars, class teachers, advisors, counselors, and members of the college's service and management teams. At the beginning of the new academic year, Mei Ciqi and Ruan Dong, presented letters of appointment to the incoming class teachers and counselors.

On behalf of all course teachers of Xinya College, Professor Huang Yusheng, teaching Heritage of Western Intellectual Tradition and Modern Society at the Department of Philosophy, Tsinghua University, delivered a speech. Professor Huang extended a warm welcome to all freshmen and put forward three expectations for them: question teachers and all knowledge taken for granted, respect, accept and tolerate differences, and do what they like to do and become what they want to be. He also encouraged students to get closer to the truth and their own hearts through the study of science.

In his speech, Mei Ciqi, Dean of Xinya College, first expressed sincere welcome and congratulations to all freshmen, their parents and teachers on behalf of the college. Mr. Mei told the freshmen who had just graduated from a high school to be brave to make choices among the wide range of options offered by the college. He made three suggestions: first, students should recognize the cost of their choices and be willing to bear it. He hoped that students could also pursue the depth of knowledge when widening their knowledge and be brave enough to bear the inevitable cost of seeking out the treasures of human wisdom. Second, students should respect all opinions in the world and make individual choices. Mr. Mei hoped that they could deal with the relationship between an individual and a group, or themselves and the college known for its diversity, and make choices freely and humbly. When faced with choices, they need to overcome the fear that comes with choice adjustments by utilizing a firm, meaningful sense of direction. Mr. Mei also hoped that the freshmen could have the courage to give up some choices, have the wisdom of working with others, strive for the collective good and be consistent in the way forward.

Later, Mr. Ruan Dong shared his understanding of the scholarly research experience of Mr. Yang Zhenning. Mr. Yang's growth fully reflects the importance of shaping the academic taste and academic style. Mr. Ruan encouraged the students to form their own academic taste and academic style by reading the works of masters. The ceremony ended with all the students and teachers singing the anthem of Tsinghua University. As new members of the college, the freshmen will now embark on their new journey here.
