This article is Mr. Jiang Kaili's Speech at the Opening Ceremony of Freshmen in 2017.

Congratulations! Welcome to Xinya College. I am a teacher from the Department of Physics. As a "science geek", my humanistic quality is to be improved. Last year, I was so honored to be employed by Xinya College as a form teacher together with Ms. Gao Jin. Ms. Gao was responsible for students' humanistic and art education while I was responsible for the necessity of life. Unexpectedly, I, a real "science geek", was significantly changed by Xinya College in the past one year. Now, I'd like to share with you several things that enlightened me.

The first thing is about the 2nd Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition of Xinya School held on the afternoon of November 15, 2016. I remember a student named Gao Fei and several teachers spoke at the exhibition. They talked about several characteristics of art, which inspired me. Let me repeat their words first: No one is an artist, and no one is not an artist; art is an inner impulse; art is crazy; art comes from inspiration; art pursues unconventional and maverick things; art education is to help students gain rich imagination and creativity. These words resonated strongly with me. For the first time, I realized that art and science are interlinked, and that they are amazingly consistent. If you replace the word "art" with "science", it is completely correct: No one is a scientist, and no one is not a scientist; science is an inner impulse; science is crazy; science comes from inspiration; science pursues unconventional and maverick things; science education is to help students gain rich imagination and creativity. Perfect! That event was enlightening to me. I felt very excited.

The second thing is about a lecture titled "Art Inspiring" by Mr. Li Mu on the afternoon of November 16, the day after the exhibition. Encouraged by Mr. Li, I completed the first sketch in my life. Unfortunately, he did not give me any comment in class. The most wonderful part of that class was his comments. Before the end of the class, Mr. Li commented on the painting of every student. He could find the beauty and originality of each painting. This was amazing for not only me, but also the students who were commented on, "Wow, I didn't know I am so great!" Such an impressive experience made me think that if my art teacher was Mr. Li, maybe I am now a member of the Academy of Arts and Design.

That night, I slightly modified Mr. Wen Yiduo's words and sent them to Mr. Li via WeChat to show my respect for him. I don't know whether you have noticed the original words of Mr. Wen Yiduo inscribed in a pavilion next to the Auditorium of Tsinghua University: The talent of a poet is love, love for his motherland and his people. As the Chinese Teachers' Day is coming, I would like to share the words I sent to Mr. Li with all the teachers present today:

The talent of a teacher is love, love for his lecture hall and his students.

Because of the two things, I pondered general education and have a new idea of it. General education contains humanistic education, art education, and science education. The purpose of humanistic education is to teach people to love the world while that of art education and science education is to teach people to discover and create beauties. Through humanistic education, we learn to love the world, including all creatures and plants, with a generous mind. Art education enables us to discover and create beauties, so as to make the world better. Science education helps us to discover new phenomena, new things and new laws, and create new theories and inventions, so that we can understand the world more thoroughly and make it more harmonious.

That is all about my perceptions obtained after coming to Xinya College one year ago. I'm very glad to share them with you. Thank you for your listening.
