At 14:00, June 10, 2021,the 1st Creative Design and Intelligent Engineering (CDIE) Undergraduates' Graduation Exhibition commenced at North Building of 10 Building in Xinya College. Attendees to the opening ceremony included Zheng Li, Vice President of Tsinghua University and the 1st Dean of Xinya College, Ma Sai, Professor at Academy of Arts & Design, Secretary of Party Committee and CDIE's disciplinary leader, Xu Yingqing, Professor at Academy of Arts & Design, Director of The Future Laboratory andthe First CDIE's disciplinary leader, Zhang Changshui, Professor at Department of Automation, Director of Information Processing Institute and CDIE's disciplinary leader, Ji Linhong, Professor at Department of Mechanical Engineering and CDIE's disciplinary leader, Wang Hong, Professor at Department of Automation, Director of Center for Teaching Quality Evaluation and a member of CDIE's Teaching Sub-committee, Su Peng, Director of Administration Center of Colleges andSecretary ofits Party General Branch, Gan Yang, Dean of Xinya College, Ruan Dong, Head of Party Working Group of Xinya College, Zhao Xiaoli, Deputy Dean of Xinya College, and some lectures, dissertation and graduation design supervisors and all students in CDIE department. Zhang Lei, Professor at Academy of Arts & Design, Director of DepartmentofIndustrial Design and a member of CDIE Teaching Sub-committee, presided over the ceremony.

Established in 2016, "Creative Design and Intelligent Engineering (CDIE)" is a cross disciplinary subject which relies on competitive faculty from Academy of Arts & Design, Department of Automation and Department of Mechanical Engineering and aims to cultivate versatile talent with sufficient knowledge of engineering foundations, design ability and professional aesthetic judgment on the basis of general education. This year, the first batch of undergraduates would embrace their graduation withthe 1st CDIE Undergraduates' Graduation Exhibition themed on "Unconventional Collision".

At the opening ceremony, Vice President Zheng Li congratulated the first CDIE undergraduates for their upcoming graduation. He said that it's not an easy task to establish a cross disciplinary subject and what CDIE department achieved today was owed to the concerted efforts of Xinya College, Academy of Arts & Design, Department of Automation, Department of Mechanical Engineering and other departments, great work that had been done in overcoming difficulties by all teachers from different departments and all students' industrious study and exploration in various disciplines. He encouraged that all students should look far and uphold adventure spirit in academic exploration. Adhering to CDIE' principle of "being aesthetic and practical", he was in hope that students could make the best use of their versatility both in sciences and arts to "satisfy people's needs of a better life".

As Prof. Xu Yingqing mentioned, all teachers from Department of Automation, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Academy of Arts & Design had been working hard in CDIE's development for half a decade since its establishment, and now their efforts were paid off with significant progress. Of the first 13 CDIE graduates, 12 would choose to continue their postgraduate studies at Tsinghua University andone would study abroad, which could be seen as a clear proof of CDIE's fruitful cultivation.

Prof. Zhang Changshui said that there are two cores in CDIE, namely cross disciplines and innovation, which were also the cores for students' development for decades in the future. He urged that students should stay motivated in study and hang tough on it so as to make glorious achievements. After reviewing an experience of being invited to the establishment of CDIE department, Prof. Ji Linhong said that cross disciplinary subjects were of apparent significance to the needs of current social development, and CDIE, being one of them, was prospective and promising. Prof. Ma Sai commended that students studying in CDIE Department had a strong and comprehensive ability related to fine arts and engineering and he also gave his best wishes to students, expecting that all could have a better personal development in the future.

Subsequently, Yu Tianyu gave a speech as a valedictorian, putting forward his thinking about cross disciplines from a student’s perspective and summarizing his achievements in five-year study into three words, which were “vision”, “teacher-student relationship” and “classmates”. He further explained that cross disciplinary study enabled him to learn and think more, thatthe mode of teaching in a small class was beneficial to cultivating a unique relationship between teachers and students, andthatthe most unforgettable memory came to the study with classmates over the last five years of mutual improvement and common development.

Later, Dean Gan Yang expressed his sincere thanks to entire CDIE's faculty team on behalf of Xinya College. He pointed out that many teachers were willing to undertake the extra work other than their teaching and research in their own departments for the sake of their great confidence in CDIE cross disciplinary subject as well as their concerns and cares for students in CDIE Department.He also expected that all students could learn from such spirit of utter devotion, as only those with such noble spirit instead of paying close attention to individual gains and losses could make true contributions to human society. He also hoped that all CDIE's students could have great ambitions, aspirations and confidence and remain their curiosity and pursuit for the unknown.

After the opening ceremony, all attending guests, teachers and students visited the exhibition together, and everyone stopped on their way to appreciate the well-made and well-designed exhibits which ignited heated discussions and interactions.
