From July 8th to 26th, 2019, some teachers and students of Xinya College went totheLondon School of Economics (LSE) for three weeks of study and practice. The study mainly involved Politics, Economy, History, Culture, and International Relations. The practice, starting from the relationship between Britain andthe “Belt and Road Initiative” andtaking the product brand as the breakthrough point as an integral part of national soft power, involvedan on-the-spot investigation of the status of representative Chinese products in the minds of British citizens, and the underlying political, economic and cultural reasons.

Recently, Xinya Collegeheld the 2019 Summer Practice Summary Meeting.Wang Tianyu, Lei Dengyuhan, Liu Yuwei and Nan Zhaohan took the stage to share and summarize on behalf of the LSE overseas practiceteam.

Lei Dengyuhan shared hiscourse experience at LSE,early-stage preparations for practical investigation and life experience in London. He said that this LSE coursewas relatively“easy” compared withhisstudies at Tsinghua, but it required a lot of work to fully understand the problem awareness and extensibility that it contained. Many resources and opinions in and out of class also needed to be achieved through concrete communication and even detailed inquiry. Therefore, students must have a positive attitude towards learning in order to learn something. In addition, he also talked about his real experience of the diversity and historicity of London, and how to explore cultural connotations through appearances.

Liu Yuwei shared her experience of learning and traveling in London. She mentioned that most of the students’ studies at Xinya are close to ancient classic texts and lack a certain sensitivity to the era.Studying at LSE prompted students to combine classroom study with realistic economic problems and the national community, enabling them to realize the profundity of the problems raised in the classics and understand the value of classic texts. At the same time, the process of traveling also providesa chance to experience London. Sculptures and monuments can be seen everywhere in the London streets, not as scenic spots but more as a part of life, close and natural. Considering the above, our city also needs the fusion of our own memories and understanding. Nan Zhaohan, a first-year graduate student from the School of Economics and Management, mentioned in her speech that the knowledge learned in class should be connected in practical research so as to reflect on practical problems.

As the student leader of this LSE practiceteam, Wang Tianyu introduced the social research activities on the cognition and evaluation of the Chinese Huawei brand in British society through personal interviews, street interviews, data analysis, etc.

After the live presentations of the four students, the summary meeting entered into a questioning and communication session. Dean Gan Yangmade suggestions on the practical research of the LSEteam and reminded the students that during their stay inBritain, they should research andreflect on themes with more historical and realistic complexity such as Brexit.Teacher Zhao Xiaoli further asked, “Many of the contents reported by the students can actually be obtained through the Internet. We should ask, what do we have to go toLondon to find out?”

Teacher Gao Jin expounded uponthe topics mentioned in the students’ reports, such as listed companies and famous Chinese entrepreneurs, and pointed out that in practice, we should get rid of trust in authority without hesitation and explore our own ideas more carefully so as to achieve deeper thinking in practice. Teacher Zhang Weite asked the students about their life and communication at LSE.

At last, Teacher Cao Li evaluated and summarized the practical activities of the LSEteam. Sheaffirmed the students’ creativity and gains in this practice, then added thatthe first-yearcollegestudents have little accumulation in knowledge reserves, research methods, research approaches, etc. Therefore, shehopes that the students willfocus more onthe connotations and process ofoverseasstudy tours and practice in the future, and cultivate their ability for cross-civilization understanding and dialogue in the specific work. She also encouragedthem to work hard, make progress through knowledge and practice, and strive to“gain by learning and doing”.
