POSTSTRUCTURALISM: Language, Subjectivity, Power, & Society

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to one of the most influential schools of thought in the twentieth century: poststructuralism. Poststructuralism emerged during the 1960s as both a continuation and critique of structuralism, aiming to challenge the assumptions of fixed meanings and stable structures underlying language, knowledge, and power. This radical departure from the structuralist philosophical-linguistic worldview, positions poststructuralism as the beginning of the postmodern era in the history of Western thought.

After a brief overview of structuralism, this course delves into the key concepts, and theories, associated with two French poststructuralist thinkers, Jaques Lacan and Michel Foucault. to provide an understanding of their unique perspectives on language, subjectivity, power, and society. Additionally, each session is paired with a short literary text or film to facilitate class discussion. These selected works serve to concretize the abstract concepts discussed in each session, providing students with an opportunity to actively engage with the theorists’ ideas and to critically assess the limitations of their perspectives.

Throughout the course, students engage in critical readings of primary texts, participate in class discussions, and develop analytical skills to apply theories to various domains, including literature, film, art, and cultural studies. By the end of the course, the students will not only possess a comprehensive understanding of poststructural logic and methods but also have the opportunity to reflect on the human condition in the present context through the lens of these major poststructuralist philosophers. This course eventually aims to create a space for rethinking and critically examining the assumptions and dynamics that shape our understanding of the world.
